Burst pipes and floods
Emergency Plumbers in Brakpan
Emergency plumbers in Brakpan for a burst pipe, a geyser pouring through the ceiling or sewage coming up indoors. You hear on the call which valve to close, the water is stopped first, and the repair is priced in writing after that.
Request a call-out
The first minutes, by what you can see
Five situations, and the first move for each one.
A burst pipe or a fitting spraying. Close your own valve on the house side of the meter, or the stopcock where the pipe enters the house, and then ask for a call-out.
Water through the ceiling under the geyser. Turn the geyser’s breaker off, shut the valve on its cold feed, and catch the worst of the drip in a bucket.
Sewage coming up a shower, bath or toilet. Stop using water in the house so you add nothing to it, and keep everyone away from it.
Water rising in the road or the verge. Not yours to fix. Keep people and cars clear of the spot and report it to the City.
No water at all. Usually supply, not plumbing. Ask a neighbour and check the City’s notices before asking for a plumber.
Street or house
When water comes up through the road, the emergency is the City's
Where Ekurhuleni's responsibility stops and yours begins, and why some Brakpan roads call for more care than a burst usually does.
Under Ekurhuleni's Water Services By-law, the connection pipe, the meter and the City's own valve on the street side all belong to the City, which maintains and repairs them. The owner is responsible for everything from the connection point inwards, including a second isolating valve just inside the boundary that the owner keeps in working order. In an emergency that line settles two things: who repairs the fault, and which valve you are allowed to close.
A burst on your side is stopped at your valve. A burst on the City's side cannot be, and should be left alone, because the meter and the City's valve are its property. Water bubbling up through the tar or the verge, or running from around the meter box, is a fault to report on 0860 543 000, not a job for a plumber you pay.
In parts of Brakpan there is a second reason to stand back. Illegal miners have tunnelled under several roads: Gauteng Tourism's report on illegal mining in Brakpan names Snake Road near the N12, Golden Drive, Main Reef Road and Oval Road near Sherwood Gardens, and lists water pipes, stormwater drains and electricity cables among what is at risk. Main Reef Road was closed in 2021 after its surface collapsed, and the City's chief engineer said illegal miners were tampering with the infrastructure there daily.
Water escaping under a road like that wastes more than water. It can wash out ground that has already been dug hollow. If water appears in the road, or a hollow opens near the kerb, keep people and cars away from the spot, report it to the City and the police, and leave the pipe to the City's teams.
Some emergencies are not plumbing at all. When a Rand Water booster pump that fills the Sallies reservoir broke down in September 2020, supply to Brakpan, Brenthurst, Withok Estates and nearby areas was intermittent for six days. In February 2023 a power failure at the Mapleton booster station, believed to be from theft on its supply, left the Sallies reservoir almost empty. When every tap in the street is dry, a plumber cannot help; when only your house is dry, one can.
Know where your own isolating valve is and check that it turns. Water on your side of the meter: close it and ask for a plumber. Water in the road: stand back and phone the City.

How an emergency call is priced
The call-out is said before anyone drives, and the repair is written before it starts.
Said on the phone
The call-out charge, and whether a late-night or weekend call costs more. No one drives out on an amount you have not heard.
Written before work
- Stopping the water and making it safe comes first.
- The repair is priced in writing before it starts, and you can have it done later.
What moves the number
- Where the burst is: exposed, in a wall, under paving or a slab.
- A temporary repair now, listed as temporary.
- Making good afterwards, on its own line.
What happens on an emergency call
Water off first, prices second.
-
Close the valve, then tell us
On the call you are told which valve to close if it is not closed yet, and to switch the geyser off if hot water is involved.
-
Made safe on arrival
The water is stopped and the area made safe before anything is priced.
-
The repair priced in writing
Repair now or later is your choice, with the price written down either way.
-
Tested and recorded
The repair is tested under mains pressure, and the invoice records the cause and what was replaced, for your insurer.
Emergency questions, answered before you need them
Cost first, then what to do while you wait.
What does an emergency plumber cost in Brakpan?
The call-out charge is said on the phone, including whether the hour changes it. Stopping the water comes first; the repair is priced in writing after that, and none of it starts until you have the price.
Where is my isolating valve?
Usually on the pipe just inside your boundary, near the meter, because the by-law asks for one there. Some houses also have a stopcock where the pipe enters the building. Look for it on a calm day and try turning it, so the first time is not during a flood.
Water is coming up in the road outside. Should I call a plumber?
No. The pipes in the road belong to the City. Report it on 0860 543 000, keep people and cars clear of the spot, and stay well back if the ground has sunk.
Sewage is coming into the house. What do I do right now?
Stop using water anywhere in the house, so nothing more goes down, and keep children and pets away from it. Do not hose it towards the yard gully. Then ask for a call-out; the blocked drains page explains how to tell whose side the blockage is on.
Can it be made safe tonight and repaired later?
Often that is the better order. The water is stopped with a temporary fix, labelled as temporary on the invoice, and the lasting repair gets its own written price for a day that suits you.
Should I turn the geyser off when a pipe bursts?
If the burst is on a hot pipe, or water is coming through the ceiling, yes. Turn it off at the board before you close the water, so it is not heating a tank that may be emptying.
Will my insurance pay for a burst pipe?
That depends on the policy, and many treat the damage caused differently from the failed pipe itself. Photograph everything before it is moved, and ask your insurer what it needs from the plumber before the repair starts.
The whole street has no water. Is that a job for an emergency plumber?
No. A dry street is a supply fault, so check the City’s notices or phone 0860 543 000. Close your taps, so that water does not run unattended when the supply comes back.
Often the next job after this one
- Geyser repairOnce the water is off, the geyser is tested to find out whether it is a part or the tank.
- Blocked drainsHow to tell whether sewage backing up is your drain or the City's sewer.
- Leak detectionFor the slow leak that never becomes a flood but keeps the meter turning.
Tell us what has happened
If water is still pouring out, close the valve first, then send the coupon. A plumber phones you back with the call-out charge, any late-night or weekend rate, and when someone can come.
